Searching the SETI Ellipsoid with Gaia

چکیده

The SETI Ellipsoid is a geometric method for prioritizing technosignature observations based on the strategy of receiving signals synchronized to conspicuous astronomical events. Precise distances nearby stars from Gaia makes constraining crossing times possible. Here we explore utility using Catalog Nearby Stars select targets SN 1987A Ellipsoid, as well Ellipsoids defined by 278 classical novae. Less than 8% within 100 pc sample are inside meaning vast majority still viable monitoring over time. We find an average 734 per year volume will intersect 1987A, with ~10% those having distance uncertainties better 0.1 lyr.

The Gaia mission Pulsating stars with Gaia

Gaia is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) selected in 2000, with a target launch date of 2011. The Gaia mission will perform a survey of about 1 billion sources brighter than V = 20. Its goal is to provide astrometry leading to parallaxes, proper-motions and positions. Astrometric data are complemented by multicolour photometry and a spectroscopic instrument (up to V = 17...

SETI with SKA

SETI with SKA would be by far the most powerful SETI search ever undertaken, covering enough stars with enough sensitivity to probe significantly further towards those other Earth civilisations than previous ones. This paper discusses the rationale behind radio SETI searches, and explains why SKA will be such as big step forward and will make few demands on telescope time.

GAIA Galaxy Survey: a multi-colour galaxy survey with GAIA

The performance expected from a galaxy survey to be carried out with GAIA, the GAIA Galaxy Survey, is outlined. From a statistical model of galaxy number density, size and surface brightness distribution, and from detailed numerical simulations based on real images, it is conservatively estimated that GAIA would be able to detect and observe about 3 million galaxies brighter than V ≃ 17 and to ...

Optical SETI with NASA’s Terrestrial Planet Finder

NASA’s space-borne nulling interferometer (the Terrestrial Planet Finder – TPF) will look for the traces of early life in the infrared spectra of extrasolar planets, beginning in roughly 2010. We point out that this instrument will also be sensitive to deliberate laser transmissions from a technologically advanced civilization. A kilowatt-class infrared laser with a 10-m beam director would pro...
